Maine Governor LePage Compares I.R.S. to the Gestapo

(WCSH) AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Governor Paul LePage is once again raising eyebrows with his comments, calling a U.S. Government agency “the new Gestapo.”

He made the comments in his weekly address, which he used to attack the Supreme Court’s decision that upheld the president’s health care law.

Speaking of the individual mandate, which was found constitutional, he said, “This decision has made America less free. We the people have been told there is no choice. You must buy health insurance or pay the new Gestapo – the I.R.S.”

The mandate is the principal point of controversy for opponents of the law.
Critics say it’s unconstitutional to require Americans to buy insurance or pay a penalty, but the Supreme Court upheld the penalty as a type of tax.

LePage is continuing to assail the law, saying the government is encouraging people to rely on the government instead of encouraging self-reliance.

The Gestapo was the secret police organization that served in Nazi Germany which kidnapped and killed thousands of people.
